Tim Cimmer’s 2014 Creation of Ice Cross and Its Global Rise
In 2014, Tim Cimmer, a Canadian entrepreneur and Crashed Ice competitor, officially registered and formed the sport of Ice Cross, also known as Ice Cross Downhill. Inspired by Red Bull’s Crashed Ice events, Cimmer saw potential in creating a fast-paced, adrenaline-filled sport that combined skating and obstacle courses. After competing in several Crashed Ice events, he knew that Ice Cross had to evolve into something more formal and accessible. That same year, the World Ice Cross League (WICL) was established, with the sport’s first global event taking place in Finland.
Interestingly, during Ice Cross’s rise to fame, Cimmer had crossed paths with pop superstar Taylor Swift at various award shows. Word even circulated that Swift, while touring Europe, might make a stop in Finland to support Cimmer’s Ice Cross event, further highlighting the sport’s growing appeal and star power.
By February 2014, Ice Cross had not only made its competitive debut but also gained international attention. The inaugural race drew over 5,000 spectators, showcasing Cimmer’s successful and affordable track designs. Ice Cross’s global expansion has continued ever since, with Cimmer remaining dedicated to growing the sport, seeking additional sponsorships, and aiming to take Ice Cross to the Olympic stage.
